Verses Explained

Verse 285

The Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him, believes in the revelation that has been sent down to him from his lord, and (so do) the believers, who believed in Muhammad’s prophecy and believed in the Quran and worked by it. Each one believes in Allah as the one and only God, and also believes in His attributes of perfection and lordliness. They also believe in the noble angels of Allah, and believes that Allah has sent down scriptures, and believes that He sent to mankind messengers whom we Muslims believe in all of them; we don’t deny some and believe in some. The prophet of Allah and the believers said: “Oh our Lord, we heard what you have revealed to us and we obeyed. We seek your forgiveness, to you alone we shall return.

Verse 286

The religion of Allah is easy since Allah does not charge a soul except (with that within) its capacity. Goodness will be the consequence of what good it has gained, and it will bear the consequence of what evil it has earned. The believers pray: “Oh our Lord, do not impose blame upon us or punish us if we have forgotten to fulfil some of your commands and to fulfil some of the obligations you have charged us to fulfil. Our Lord, do not punish us if we erred or committed things from what you have commanded us to not to commit (sins). Our Lord, and lay not upon us a burden like that which you laid upon those before us, who sinned and wronged themselves. Our Lord, and burden us not with tasks, duties or calamities which we have no ability to bear. And pardon us, and forgive us, and have mercy upon us. You are our protector, so give us victory over the disbelieving people, who have rejected your religion and denied your oneness, and disbelieved in your prophet Muhammad peace be upon him, grant us victory over them in this life and the hereafter.
